Photo included with article story by DORIS MARICLE : Boating accident kills Sweet Lake man LCAP 12/05/2006 A Sweet Lake man died Monday in a boating accident on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. A small boat operated by Bodie Lance Whetstone, 18, capsized at around 8:30 a.m. near the Gibbstown Bridge. His body was found at 2:30 p.m. about 200 yards east of the bridge, according to Lt. Remy Broussard of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. A captain on a nearby boat reported the accident, and a 5 /2-hour search for Whetstone began at 9 a.m. Agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and officers from the Calcasieu and Cameron sheriff’s offices conducted the search and recovered the body, Broussard said. According to Broussard, Whetstone had not taken proper safety precautions while boating. “He was all by himself on a 14-foot boat. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket, and he wasn’t using a kill switch on the boat,” Broussard said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
