All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** GEORGE BRYAN KORNEGAY George Bryan Kornegay, 59, prominent Cameron busi­nesaman, died at 5 p.m. Thursday [22 JUL 1971] at one of his places of business. Kornegay, who had been a Cameron resident for the past 25 years, was the owner and operator of Kornegay's Supermarket, Cameron Food Mart, Sears Catalog Store, G. B.'s Drive-Inn, and the Cam Bar. Born April ?? 1912, in Georgetown, S. C., Kornegay attended high school there and studied at the University of Georgia before poor eye­sight force him to give up plans to enter medical school. During World War 11, he served as a medic with the Army in Gennay and Italy. Kornegay later went into the shrimpinig business and worked in Brownsville, Texas and Cameron. He also became associated with John Santos in the menhaden busi­ness, an association which lasted many years. Moving to Cameron in 1946, Kornegay went into several businesses, including a variety store, freight line and an ice cream stand. Fol1owing Hurricane Audrey, he entered the gro­cery business opening Kornegay's Supermarket, later also buying Cameron Food Mart. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Lions Club. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Services will be Saturday in the Wakefield Methodist Church with the Rev. Aubrey Coody, pastor, officiating. Survivors include one son, Bryan" B. Kornegay; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas J. Watts, both of Cameron; one brother, W. B. Kornegay of Patterson, and two grandchil­dren.
