Morris is a man of great muscular power, and the stroke was so severe as to fracture the skull of Campbell, who ran a short distance and expired almost immediately after receiving it. The Concordia Intelligencer says in relation to the occurrence: "Both parties to this murder were men of middle age and heads of families. Neither of them were men of bad character, while one – the less unfortunate of the two, the murdered man, Colin Campbell, was generally esteemed and liked in both Catahoula and Concordia parishes. It appears that some time ago he rented from Morris a portion of the place where he was killed – Morris continuing to occupy a portion of it also. The term of renting having expired, Morris notified Campbell that he must leave the premises ; and Campbell answered that he could not or would not leave until he found another house. Threats of ejection followed, and were defied ; the parties met, and lo! the murder!"
