He was born November the 21st, 1809 and consequently was 76 years, 4 months and 8 days old. Mr. Young was a native of this parish. In 1843 he settled on Little River among the pioners to that portion of Catahoula which was then mostly a wilderness. He was the last of the old settlers of that region, all others having either died of removed. He early espoused the cause of Religion by uniting with the Methodist church and followed the path of rectitude with unerring steps during a long and useful life. With a stainless character combined with Christianity, honesty and integrity mingled with whole-souled geniality, he possessed all the attributes which go to make up the upright man, kind neighbor and good citizen. The pretensions of royalty and riches towards high toned morality may all be well enough in their places, but a spotless character in the more humble walks of life is the brightest star that twinkles in our moral firmament. It is purity "Wrapped in the solitude of its own originality." Mr. Young leaves a large family consisting of children and grandchildren together with a host of friends to mourn his loss. The faithful wife of his youth, the mother of his children had preceded him a few years to the Spirit Land. He has gone to join her on those blissful shores whose ceaseless waves beat to the sweet cadence of "Redeeming grace and never dying love." We should not wish to recall him even if we could. He has run well his race and past the bounds of man's appointed years Let him rest in peace. Life's blessings all enjoyed. Life's labors done, Serenely to his final rest has passed. Let us thank heaven for such a life - such an example and be content. May we all profit by it and - "So live, that, when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moves to that mysterious realm where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach they grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to peaceful dreams." (Note: Absalom Young was born in South Carolina - confirmation of who his parents are has not been made at this time. He married Eliza Stone Harvey on June 10, 1830 in Catahoula Parish. She was the daughter of Blassingame W. Harvey and Eliza Stone, born June 30, 1813. Absalom Young is buried in the Forsythe Cemetery, Jena, La. sharing a marker with his wife, Eliza Stone Harvey, who died July 9, 1884.) Submitted: Carol Young Knight
