Sohnchen John C. Calhoun was born near Monticello, Fairfield County, S. C. on November 5, 1812, the second child, and oldest son of Margaret Henry and Alexander Calhoun. His mother died in 1824, and his father followed in 1826, leaving six children. Their aunt, Martha Henry Calhoun, took on the responsibility of raising the children on their father’s plantation until John became of age and assumed that responsibility. In 1832, his oldest sister married, and in 1835, John sold the Plantation, moved the family to Troup County, Georgia; and joined the family of John and Mary Hawthorn Davidson. Together, he and Mr. Davidson purchased a large plantation adjacent to the Chattahoochee River near LaGrange, Georgia. They became partners in the Troup County, Georgia Cotton Business. It was on December 10, 1840, that John Calhoun married Elizabeth Davidson in Troup County, GA. Both of these families enjoyed much success in Georgia, and the first four of John and Elizabeth’s eight children were born there. In 1850, John and Mr. Davidson made the decision to sell their land and business in Troup County, and move to northern Louisiana. They arrived very early in 1851, and settled near Athens in Claiborne Parish, bringing with them Samuel Younge Gladney. The last four of John and Elizabeth’s children were born in Claiborne Parish. By 1870, John purchased more land in Arizona, LA. Where he built a home and moved his family, leaving one of his sons to operate the cotton plantation, known as the Eagle’s Nest, near Athens. John C. Calhoun died on May 12, 1877 in Arizona. Elizabeth went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Levi Lafayette Upton in Athens. She died on December 15, 1890. Both John and Elizabeth along with Elizabeth parents, John and Mary Hawthorn Davidson, are buried in the Lower Old Athens Cemetery.
