Gilgal Baptist Church Cemetery, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana Submitted for the LAGenWeb Archives by: Joan Hough Harrington Tomlinson & Max Kenneth Huff (johough@swbell.net) Results from 2005 completed survey ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Gilgal Baptist Church Cemetery Location: From I-20, take LA Hwy 518 west towards Minden for eight miles to Harris Crossroads, turn left on Will Beck Davis Rd (PR 15) for approx. three miles to a crossroad, turn left at the crossroad and go 1/2 mile and the cemetery will be on the left. The cemetery is located in Section 23 T 19N R 8W Survey made: Summer 2004/2005 This survey includes a personal reading of stones and a later reading of photographs taken of the stones.  Both a list and photographs are included herein. Genealogical information, which has been carefully researched, is included in some instances. A plaque on the gate post reads: "In Memory of Bro. and Mrs. Elizah Strickland Who Donated the Original Church and Cemetery Plot".  A plaque on the fence reads:  "Fence Given In Loving Memory and Honor of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. HARRIS". This Gilgal survey, earlier submitted in part by Joan Hough Harrington Tomlinson has been completed with the cooperation of Max Kenneth Huff. It should be noted that all persons buried here with their names spelled as either ALMAND or ALMOND are members of the same family group. Punctuation marks of brackets [example] denote surveyor’s observations. (Parentheses are used when, actually, present on the stone.) Periods and commas are added, occasionally, by surveyor for purpose of clarity of meaning. A question mark, or underline or dots in a row ...indicates illegible or missing letters or numbers. When a letter or number is greatly similar to another, both symbols may appear separated by a slash/. Maiden names are, usually, seen in capitols. In a very few instances this survey determined familial relationships by stones’ adjacent positions, matching stone configurations, and words such as “mother” and “father” on stones.  Dates were, also, considered.  Term “Stone with” is applied only to partners whose names appear on single stone or a joined pair of stones. Personal genealogical research & legal documentation, also, provided some of the information seen here, including the relationships of some of the graves’ occupants. The reader should be aware that some double stones have two names listed (husband and wife), but only the date of death for one.  Whether or not a second person is buried there, cannot be determined. In all instances where there are two names on a shared stone, the husband’s name is the one placed first on the list of photographs; the wife’s name will be found following that of her spouse. This is not the case in the regular list of names, as both the husband and the wife have names listed separately. At least one stone has two names, but no dates, possible indicating a couple made a purchase of a stone while still living. Sadly, it must be reported that there are numerous stones impossible to read.  Some might be cleaned and read eventually.  Some have chunks with inscriptions totally missing. Some stones are crumbled. In addition, there were no phone numbers posted so that church officials might be reached to learn if any cemetery records are still held by the church. Perhaps some future genealogist will be able to make inquiries regarding this matter. If the reader is unable to decipher the words in a stone’s photo, the separate list may give the information. Readers of the following list should be cognizant of the fact that old time stone inscribers often could not make clear C and G letters, so the surveyor may have recorded the wrong letter in your ancestors’ names. Earlier surveys may include names & dates for some of the stones found unreadable by the present surveyors. The stones were photographed during three different trips to Gilgal. Although every effort was made to capture all stones, it is possible that some were missed. Photographers were Max HUFF & Joan HOUGH the submitters. ********************************************************** ADAMS, Georgia                 Nov 1890-Aug 2 1891 ADAMS, Grandmother             [undated stone.
