1870 Claiborne Parish, LA 
Transcriber's Notes: This transcription was made from a CD-Rom, purchased from Allcensus, of the 1870 
federal census of Claiborne Parish, National Archives Mircofilm No.: M593-510. The transcriber tried to 
copy the data just as the enumerator wrote it. However, due to faded ink, enumerator's errors in Family 
Numbers, enumerator's penmanship/spelling, or mis-interpretation of the data by the transcriber, certain 
errors may occur. I welcome any and all documented constructive criticism that will make this 
transcription of Ward 1 more accurate and useful for the genealogical community. I transcribed ONLY page 
one of the census of 1870, which included: Line #, Dwell. # Fam. #, Name, Age, Sex, Color, Occupation, 
Real Est., Pers. Est., and Birth place. In accordance with accepted guidelines, I used an asterisk 
whenever questionable letters in a name were found to indicate questionable letters in a name. The number 
of asterisks (*) do NOT mean that there are that many letters in question. For example: AL**OD or BLACK****. 
If no surname was listed, I used NS in the blank. If no first name was listed. I wrote NN (No Name) in the 
blank. If the Enumerator used a ditto mark (") or "do", in the place of a surname, I wrote the surname in 
the proper blank. If I was uncertain of the Surname or First Name, I would put a "?" beside the respective 
section In the upper left corner of the census schedule, the sequential page number for the Ward is listed 
and I typed that number in the Reference Section to assist researchers. The ACTUAL Census Schedule page 
number (found in the upper right corner of the page) is located in the "Page #" section. Due to the condition 
of the Census Schedule when microfilmed, some pages, names, ages, sex, color, occupation, real estate value, 
personal estate value, and sometimes place of birth were very difficult to read; and two pages near the end 
of the census were omitted with the phrase "Totally Illegible" or "Totally Unreadable." Researchers are 
encouraged to check the actual microfilm (M593-510) prior to using the transcription as documentation for 
their genealogical efforts since the transcriber may have unknowingly erred in the transcription. This 
transcription is designed to provide an on-line tool to the genealogical community in order to assist 
researchers in finding their ancestors and then using the actual microfilm to verify the data contained
