Church Records: Colquitt Baptist Church, Claiborne Parish, LA Submitted for the LAGenWeb Archives by: Dot Wise Wirth Date: Feb. 2000 Source: Original handwritten bound ledger in the possession of James Cortez Wise, Jr. of Colquitt, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, a descendant of Jasper Newton Wise, Sr., Church Clerk. These records follow records of State Line Church, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Variations in handwriting and spelling caused some difficulty. Some pages are not bound in the ledger but are obviously torn from this or a similar ledger. J. N. WISE was clerk of State Line Church and then clerk of the Baptist Church at Colquitt. ********************************************** Copyright. T. B. conference met in order. ...B. BRAS???, moderator; J. F. WISE, church clerk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Loose pages, by dates apparently for the Baptist Church at Colquitt, beginning about 1886. By the fact that most names are entered only once, it may be that these are records of donations for and expenses of the construction of Colquitt Baptist Church, Claiborne Parish, LA. (The one-room church, built in 1886 was in use until it was destroyed by a falling tree over 100 years later.) Names mentioned have associated monetary amounts that vary from fifty cents to $130.00. Some are obviously members making donations. Others are amounts paid to persons who may or may not be members, in many cases marked as construction expense for Church. Most notable of these are the following: Barrow V. LSNG (?) Lumber, Lumber for church, To Barrow G. (H?) GRAY - $118.43 A. M. JARRELL paid for matching Church Lumber - $5.64, And for provisions - .50 J. N. WISE for matching lumber - 3.00, Also for shingles - 22.00 John E. GRAY paid for building purposes up to date, Collected $159.00, Balance down $160.00, Balance due 1.00, June 18th 1887 J. N. WISE paid for building up to date - $165.00, Received - 163.40, Over - 1.60, June 18th 1887 Another entry, which may indicate a death: JONES, Capt. A. C., family of, was paid $20 on 27th Dec.
