Arthur from W.G. Davis This old deed was neatly and ornately handwritten on light blue, lined paper, similar to todays notebook paper, size 7 11/16" X 12 5/16". The deed is written on both front and back of the page and has attached a Military Land Warrant. All of the wording and punctuation will be retyped as nearly as can be deciphered with explanations of the various cross-outs as necessary. Punctuation and capitalization is as written in the deed. ________________________________________________________________ State of Louisiana Parish of Claiborne Know all men by these presents that I---William G. Davis of the Parish of Bienville and state aforesaid---have this day, (for and in consideration of fifty dollars cash paid me before the signing--this crossed out) transferred set, over, quit and relinquish and do by these presents transfer, set over, quit and relinquish, to and in favor of Thomas R. Arthur of the parish and state about first written all right title and interest in and to the South West Quarter of the North East Quarter of Section Fourteen in Township Twenty Of Range Eight containing thirty nine 79/100 acres more or less, which is now or at any time been vested in me by virtue of a certificate of the location of the said land in my name issued by J.B. Cloutier Register of the Land Office at Natchitoches in this state and dated at said Land Office on the 6th day of January 1855. He the said Thomas R. Arthur his heirs and assigns to have and to hold the said land for ever without let or hindrance from me, my heirs or assigns as fully and as completely as if the said land had been located in his own name. The reason for the assignment being that I the said W.G. Davis did intend at the date of the entry of the said land (intend--crossed out) to transfer the said certificate of location (which certificate is hereunto affixed and made part hereof) unto the said Thomas R. Arthur, and also at the said date, to wit: the 6th day of January 1855 execute an assignment of the said certificate thereon in his favor in presence of and attested by the said Registrar of the Land Office, but in consequence of the said assignment not being attested by two witnesses it was not in form and was not recognized by the General Land Office of the United States in such wise as to cause the issuing the patent For the said Land in the name of the said Thomas R. Arthur; This assignment being intended to complete Page 2--continued and fulfill my said intention and desire of the 6th day of January 1855. It being fully understood by both parties to the transfer that I the said W.G. Davis having entered the said land for the use and benefit of the said T. R. Arthur herein guarantee only that no encumbrances of any Kind whatever exist against the said land in my name.
