L Wilson acting recorder of the General Land Office ad in terim H M Garland (marked out) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE FROM JOY Moore: This land document has marked across the center of it "CANCELLED Tract selected for seminary purposes previous to location of this floating Pre-Claim Money ordered to be refunded - see Letter to R. of R. 7 April 1838 " These two men had another certificate issued to them It is certificate No 21657 dated second of August 1837 One of the things I find interesting about this certificate is the fact that the land was preempted for a seminary and I found in Arcadia a seminary for ladies and men. Another is the signature of the Presidents. Secretary A Van Buren That could only be Abigal Van Buren, his wife. Did the President of the United States have his wife serving as his secretary wife in a time when only men held these positions? # # #
