He was born in slavery in 1844, and live[d] his life in the community where he was well thought of by the white people. Uncle Lige, as he was known by all of his white friends, lived a useful and respected life. He was buried at Pine Hill cemetery last Saturday. Our Camp correspondent states that he has know[n] Uncle Lige for over sixty years and never heard a word said against him by anyone. Additional Comments: Elijah Adkins (later changed his surname to Reed) was the son of Lemiah Christopher Columbus Adkins and a slave woman named Mariah in Henry County, Georgia. Oral histories and the dna analysis of Elijah's great grandson confirms his biological relationship to the Adkins family.
