Metcalfe Concordia Parish, Louisiana Andrew W. Metcalfe, sheriff of Concordia parish, La., is one of the most capable officials of which the parish can boast. He was born in Adams county, Miss., in 1843, the eldest son of Dr. Volney Metcalfe, who was a native of Fleming county, Ky. He was educated in Yale college, but afterward took a medical course in the city of New York, and continued to pursue his researches in medical science in Edinburg, Scotland, and later in Paris, France. Upon returning to this country he began practicing in 1838 or 1839, establishing himself at Natchez, Miss., where he faithfully discharged the duties incumbent upon a medical career for many years. He acquired large property in Concordia parish, where he died of yellow fever in 1852. Dr. Metcalfe married Miss Annie Wood, of Mason County, Ky., who is still living. Their union was blessed with five children: Andrew W., Volney, Amelia, Annie and James. Andrew W. Metcalfe, the subject of this sketch, laid the foundations of his education in the city of Natchez, Miss., after which he went to Danville, Ky., where he entered Centre college. In 1861 he dropped his books to become a votary of Mars, and enlisted in the Adams' Troop Cavalry service, and was with the Army of Northern Virginia until after the battle of Gettysburg, when he received an appointment on the staff of General Liddell, stationed at Blakely and Spanish Fort. After the war he engaged in cotton planting at Rotaquinta, where he remained until 1881, when he removed to Vidalia and accepted the position of deputy sheriff. He served in this capacity until 1888 with such efficiency that he was elected to the position of sheriff, which position he is now very acceptably filling. He was married in 1874 to Miss Kate Lee, a native of New Orleans, but at the time of their marriage she was a resident of Long Island, New York. The happiness of this marriage was terminated in 1877 by the death of Mrs. Metcalfe. Mr. Metcalfe is a gentleman of high standing, is genial and pleasant in manner, as an officer is efficient, and enjoys the respect and confidence of the citizens of Concordia parish.
