Calhoun, a third generation attorney in Concordia Parish, died Friday, February 26, 1999 at the age of 73. A lifelong resident of Vidalia, Calhoun practiced law here for almost 50 years. He served as the Vidalia town attorney for 42 years from 1950-1992. He died at the Natchez Regional Medical Center where he was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack early last week. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 28, 1999 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Paul Kunnumpuram, Father Alfred Camp and Father Walter Brown officiating. Burial was in Natchez City Cemetery under direction of Laird's Funeral Home. Calhoun followed in the footsteps of his father, the late Robert Dabney Calhoun, and his grandfather, Judge Nathan Calhoun, in the practice of law in Concordia Parish. His grandfather was the parish's first judge. Calhoun was a 1942 graduate of Vidalia High School and was the valedictorian of his class. "Nate was a purist in the practice of law," recalled Judge William C. Falkenheiner, his former law partner and brother-in-law. "He loved the law and lived by its principles." Calhoun attended Louisiana Tech after high school and later joined the U.S. Navy. His service included training at the College of Wooster and submarine duty. He enrolled at LSU after his stint in the Navy and graduated from law school in 1950, returning to Vidalia to open his law practice and begin serving as the town attorney. "Vidalia owes a great deal to Nathan," said Sidney A. Murray Jr., the mayor for much of the time when Calhoun was the town attorney. They grew up next door to each other and finished high school in the same class. "Vidalia was experiencing growing pains with lots of legal problems," Murray re- called. "Nathan guided us along and was dedicated to Vidalia. We depended on him greatly." In addition to his parents, Robert Dabney Calhoun and Anna Maria Perrault Calhoun, Calhoun was preceded in death by a brother, Robert D. Calhoun Jr., who was killed in France in World War II. His survivors include his wife, Jean Falkenheiner Calhoun, Vidalia; two daughters, Katharine Calhoun, Vidalia, and Mary Ann Carter and her husband Mark, two grandsons, Mark and Will Carter; a nephew, Robert Calhoun, and a great-niece, Tamara Calhoun, both of France. Pallbearers were Conway Aubic, Charles Falkenheiner, Larry McManus, Bill Murray, Scoop Murray and Francis Perrault. Honorary pallbearers were Charles "Dutch" Beard, Jack Dale, W. C. Falkenheiner, Sidney Murray, Percy Rountree, Logan Sewell, Ralph Shields III, Billy Dale, Fred Falkenheiner, George Murray, Sam Randazzo, Joe Schiele and Ralph Shields Jr. In addition to practicing law, Calhoun's activities were broad. He served as chairman of the Concordia Parish Democratic Executive Committee and was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Seventh District Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, American Legion, Vidalia Chamber of Commerce, Phi Delta Phi and Delta Kappa Epsilon. At a rosary on Saturday, February 27 Father Anthony Dharmaraj officiated.
