CAMPBELL, RICHARD A. Richard A. Campbell, a founder of Louisiana Central Bank and a decorated fighter pilot in World War II, died December 9, 1998 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge after a lengthy illness. He was 79. A resident of Natchez, Campbell was involved in the oil and gas industry and founded Campbell Energy Co. in Vidalia before he entered the banking field. In addition to Louisiana Central, Campbell was a founder of Louisiana Delta Bank in Lake Providence. He was chairman of the board of Louisiana Central until the formation of Louisiana Central Capital Corporation. He was chairman of the board of the corporation until his recent retirement. Campbell was born in Huttig, Ark., but moved to Concordia Parish when he was a child. He was a graduate of Ferriday High School. A graduate of LSU with a degree in mechanical engineering, Campbell was an ace fighter pilot in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Stars, Purple Hearts and other service medals. He served in various other capacities in the European, China, Burma and India theaters of operations and in the United States after the war. Campbell resigned from the Air Force with the rank of full colonel. A memorial Mass was held Friday, December 11, 1998 at St. Mary's Basilica in Natchez with the Rev. Alfred Camp and the Rev. Desmond Regan officiating. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Albert and Flora Cargill Campbell and his brother, Charles Albert Campbell Jr. Survivor information omitted for privacy purposes.
