All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** ***************************************************** Major (militia title) John James Greening was born in Sumter District (Camden) South Carolina on August 4, 1804, to John and Mary (Whitehead) Greening. In 1815, the Greening family moved to Dallas county, AL. John and Mary W. Greening died there while John J. was still a minor. He attended West Point, but left upon the death of his mother in 1824, and did not return. About 1834, he married Sarah Ann Warren, of Conecuh cty., AL. During the 1830's, he served several terms in the Alabama legislature. In 1843, the Greenings moved to DeSoto Parish, LA. They had 13 children: Frances Tillis, Mary Amanda, Virginia Elizabeth, Swepson Whitehead, Eldridge Warren, James Oscar, Hinche Rufus, John Randolph, Julius Hughes, Sarah Louisiana, Ella Alabama, Willie Lillian, and Thomas Jefferson.
