John Alexander Graves is my 3rd great-grand father. He was born about 1824 in South Carolina, and died 28 Dec. 1896 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, and was buried in Grand Cane Cemetery, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. His first wife, Clara Martina Jackson, born 1 July 1831 and died 13 July 1869, was the daughter of Abraham Wyche Jackson and Jane F. Crow (or Crowe). They were married on 17 July 1849 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. He married his second wife, Adeline B. Franklin, on 30 Dec. 1869 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. She was born 27 June 1847 in Alabama, and died 8 Sept. 1874 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. He married his third wife, Dulcina Baker, sometime around 1875, probably in Hays County, Texas. She was born about 1835 in North Carolina. His fourth wife, Cornelia Elizabeth Snell, were married sometime around 1885 in Dale County, Alabama. She was born 19 Dec. 1847 in Alabama, and died 30 Dec. 1908 in Gloster, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. John Alexander Graves was an astute businessman. During his career, he operated a store in Kingston and later in Gloster, both in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. In 1866, John Alexander Graves was the commissioner of elections for the Kingston area of the parish. (Louisiana Genealogical Register, v. XXI, No. 3, Sept. 1974, p. 219.) I aquired this photo thru my father. This picture has been in the family for at least 120 years. The picture was originaly in his granddaughters' (Sarah Alberta Webb) estate. It was inherited by her daughter, Marguerite Adeline Webb (my grandmother). My father is Marguerite's son, and when Marguerite died, my father was named Executor of Marguerite's estate. Since no one in the family wanted the picture, my father kept it. Then, when my father discovered that I was researching our family history last year, he thought I should have it, so he gave me the picture. The picture is true to color, including the rust in the hole at the top of the picture (I assume that Sarah hung the picture with a nail-ergo, the hole and rust). What can't be seen very clearly is the inscription on the bottom of the picture. It's in Sarah's handwriting and it states: "J. A. Graves -- Grandfather -- 1896". The inscription also shows the quill marks made, when Sarah was writting the inscription. Unfortuately, that's all I know about the picture. No one in my family knows when exactly she was given this picture. It could have been at the time of his death in 1896 or much earlier.
