nthony J. Wax, merchant, Baton Rouge, La.  It is universally conceded that
the distribution of food products constitutes the most important factor in
the long list of a city's industries, and, such being the case, the grocer
must be accorded the palm as the most important contributor to the
development of this fact, his wares covering almost every article of daily
consumption known to man.  This branch of mercantile activity is ably
represented by Anthony J. Wax, who carries a stock of goods valued at
21,500, and does an annual business of about $4,000.  He was born in Baton
Rouge, La., in 1858, received the principal part of his education there,
and finished in Past Christian, Miss.  He began for himself as an
accountant for his father, continued at this for four years, and then began
merchandising.  He was married in 1880 to Miss Marie L. Schmidt, a native
of New Orleans, who received her education at St. Simon convent, that city.
 They have three living children:  Edwin L.,  Lewis A. (girl) and  Ella E.
 Mr. Wax was councilman in Baton Rouge for two years.  Socially he is a
member of the Legion of Honor, Knights of Pythias, American Legion of Honor
council, No. 999, Baton Rouge, and Andrew S. Herron lodge, Knights of
Pythias, No.---.  Mr. Wax is his father s successor in the merchandise
business and is doing well.  He is a member of the Catholic church.
