Federal censuses in the United States have been taken every ten years since 1790, under the terms of the Constitution. Certain information is given in each census pertaining to the householder and those residing in his dwelling. Each census progressively furnishes more information than its predecessor. The 1820 was the fourth such Federal census. The area comprising the "Florida Parishes" of Louisiana (i.e., East Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, St. Helena, Livingston, Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Tammany Parishes) was not annexed by the United States until December, 1810. It therefore was not included in the Third Federal Census, which had been conducted earlier in the year. The 1820 census is consequently the first one pertaining to the "Florida Parishes" of Louisiana. The following listing of the householders in the 1820 East Baton Rouge Parish census is completed from Volume VIII of the Genealogical Register, page 9. This also completes the publication in the Register of the 1820 census for the Florida Parishes, the others having previously appeared. Jean B.
