Compiled and edited by Inez Bridges Tate and reprinted with permission. William Earl Easley was born and grew up in the New Zion Community of the Sixth Ward of St. Helena Parish. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Easley. The family lived on a farm where Earl assisted with the chores. He attended school at New Zion Elementary and finished there in 1942. A graduation ceremony was held and a copy of the program indicates Earl had the last part on the program entitled, "The Last Word." Earl entered high school at Greensburg but the family soon moved to Jackson, Louisiana where he was inducted into the Army from that area. Earl was killed on Okinawa. The family had his body return- ed to the United States and interred at the Cemetery in Jackson, Louisiana where they were making their home. - - - - - Newspaper clipping: 13 July 1945 KILLED ON OKINAWA - Pfc. William E. Easley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Easley of Jackson, was killed in action in Okinawa on May 14. Pfc. Easley was 18 years old and had attended high school in Greensburg. He had been in the service since September, 1944, and was sent overseas in February of (illegible). * * * * *
