Bayou Sara, Louisiana March 11, 1899 Page 1 The Mayor Killed by an Ingrate. Baton Rouge. - Friday morning, Albert W. Converse, mayor of Zachary, aged forty five years, was shot and almost instantly killed by J. Thompson, a carpenter of that place, who came originally from Water Vally [sic], Miss., where he claims to have a wife and two children. Upon his return he had an altercation with Dr. Millian, from whom he took a pistol. Later he called at the home of Mr. Converse and asked for the key to his room. Mr. Converse is reported to have charged him with ingratitude and refusued [sic] him the key of the room. It is said Thompson notified Mr. Converse that he would settle the matter the next mor[n]ing and then he walked away. They met Saturday morning and a street fight ensued, in which Mr. Converse was worsted, and he asked Thompson to stop, as he was not physically able to keep up the fight and did not wish to carry the thing any further. Mr. Preston and Mr. Miller separated the combatants. Thompson walked a few steps toward the railroad, Mr. Converse drew his pistol and fired the first shot. Thompson screned [sic] himself behind a post and returned the fire. There were eight shots exchanged. The last was the fatal shot, striking Mr. Converse in the left breast. He died in less than five minutes. Thompson surrendered to the town marshal and was brought to the Parish Prison by Deputy Sheriff Miller. The affair create no little excitement, it being the first killing in that town in fourteen years.
