Leslie Monroe Carpenter Jr., died on Monday, June 30, 2008, in Baton Rouge. He was born April 25, 1922, in Baton Rouge. He graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1939, and attended LSU and McNeese State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in September 1941. He graduated as a staff sergeant pilot in September 1942. He flew fighters in 1942 and 1943 in England, North Africa and Italy. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, nine Air Medals and two Distinguished Unit Citations plus 11 other awards during his career. His tours of duty included approximately eight years in foreign countries. He served as a communications-electronics officer, cryptographic officer and command pilot. He retired with the rank of major in 1962. After his retirement, he worked for the U.S. Navy in research and development of weapons systems. He is survived by his former wife, Marjorie Cooley Carpenter, stepdaughter, Marcia Goodman Marti, daughter, Carol Carpenter Quadrato, and son, Leslie Martin Carpenter. He also has eight grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home chapel on Monday, July 7, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Joe Dunn.
