Sister Doristein H. Cummings was born in New Orleans on Aug. 16, 1940, to Joe 
and Doreatha Harris. God called her from labor to her reward on Tuesday, July 
15, 2008, at 8:30 p.m. Sister Doristein H. Cummings accepted Christ at an 
early age and united with Greater St. James Baptist Church. She remained a 
faithful member and vice president of the senior usher board until her 
illness. Doristein was loved and admired by everyone. She was always smiling 
and could carry on a relevant conversation with anyone young or old. She 
leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Alfred Cummings; three daughters, 
Sharon Harris and husband Kevin, Bonita C. Hall and Zelda Cummings; a son, 
Darrell Cummings and wife Terri; four brothers, George, James, Charles Sr. and 
Gerald Harris; two sisters, Marion Butler and Theresa Harris; eight 
grandchildren 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other 
relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Doreatha 
Harris; brother, Vincent Harris; sister, Marjorie Gaines; and grandson, 
Brandon Lee Harris. Viewing at Desselle Funeral Home, 263 Eddie Robinson Sr. 
Drive, on Friday, July 18, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Viewing at Oasis 
Christian Church, 4524 E. Brookstown Ave., on Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. 
until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. W.M. Finister of 
Greater St. James Baptist Church. Words of comfort by Charles E. Wallace, 
pastor.
