Donellan Died Thursday, Sept 4, 1980 at 2:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Baton Rouge. He was a retired Illinois Central Gulf Railroad engineer and a Navy veteran of World War I. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home 11000 Florida Blvd. from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Friday. Religious services at 1 p.m. Friday at St. George Catholic Church Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by two daughters, Mrs. Kirby (Janet) Stephens and Mrs. Gip (Helen) Gayle, both of Baton Rouge; two sons, Hilary Donellan, Baton Rouge, and Terry Donellan, Savanna, OK: 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Laura Lanier Donellan; a son, James A. Donellan, Jr; and a grandson, Terry Stephens. Pallbearers will be Hilary and Tommy Stephens, Vincent, Michael and Tim Donellan and Richard Gayle. He was a member of St. George Catholic Church, Brotherhood of Local Engineers and American Legion Nicholson Post 38. Additional Comments: Name: James Anthony Donellan born: 1-14-1897 New Orleans, LA to Henry Thomas Donnellan and Mary McDevitt Worked for railroad for 42 yrs. VERY PROUD WWI veteran--was a water tender had tattoo's on both tops of feet one was an outline of a rooster and one a pig. I know the rooster was a superstition of Navy men that it would protect them against drowning if they went overboard.. the pig I don't know. (I hope that is what it was and not the other way around) Also, a tattoo on his forearm of an anchor son James was not a JR.. he was James ALFRED Donellan daughter's name was JEANETTE Mary not JANET son-in laws name was John Gipson "GIP" Gayle daughters name was Helen Joyce other sons name is Hilary Lanier Donellan and Terrance "Terry" Brady Donellan Wife Ellen Laura Lanier Donellan's parents were John J. Lanier and Jeannette Lyons. Ellen born: 9-12-1899 New Orleans died: 9-3-1970 Baton Rouge, LA Notice: they died 10 yrs and 1 day apart.. It had always been a wish of my grandfathers to die same day as his wife..
