A retired physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology for more than 50 years and a resident of Baton Rouge, he passed away Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at his home after a lengthy illness from carcinoma of the lung. He was 84 and a native of Hot Springs, Ark. He served as a lieutenant colonel with the Army Medical Corps and saw foreign duty in Burma, India and China. He was force surgeon for the 5307th Composite Unit popularly known as "Merrill’s Marauders." He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, the Combat Medical Award and Presidential Unit Citation. He served as a board member of American Bank and Trust Co. and Woman’s Hospital, and as an honorary board member of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was a member of B’Nai Israel Congregation, Bromeliad Society and several dance clubs. LSU Chancellor William Jenkins has proclaimed Wednesday and Thursday as days of mourning in memory of Soderbergh, who was known in the LSU and Baton Rouge communities. Serving as chairman of the University Commission on General Education, he strove to create a common academic background on which undergraduates could build their majors. A writer, he contributed articles to numerous professional journals. His published books include “Years of Grace, Days of Glory: The Legacy of Germaine Laville,” “Dr. Records’ 78 RPM Pocket Price Guide,” “Special Education USA,” “Tower, Tablet and Tree: LSU and the American Legion,” “Bright Journey: A Pictorial History of the LSU Union” and two books on the history of women in the Marine Corps. As a volunteer, he hosted “Swingin’ Sunday,” a live weekly radio show on WBRH, during which he played records from his private collection that represented popular music from 1920 to the early 1960s and went by the disc jockey nickname of Dr. Record. Educated at Amherst College, Harvard and the University of Texas, he went to LSU in 1976 from the University of Virginia, where he had been associate dean for academic affairs, admissions and student affairs. His career included not only education but also professional acting, playwriting and literary criticism. His interest was in the history of the American cinema. His son, Steven, is a director and screenwriter, whose films include “sex, lies and videotape.” At LSU, Soderbergh was instrumental in preparing teachers to teach special education students and in upgrading teacher training programs for the gifted and talented. He served in numerous university committees and was an active community volunteer, including International Special Olympics, Operation Upgrade, a counselor for The Phone at the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center and member of the board of directors and president of the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center. He was a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Marine Corps Historical Center Foundation in Washington, D.C. Among his awards, he was named one of Louisiana’s three outstanding educators in 1980 by the Louisiana Association of School Executives. He was also named Outstanding Teacher by the LSU Student Government Assocation in 1993 and was listed in “Who’s Who in America” (1980), “Who’s Who in American Education” (1989-90 and 1994-95) and “Men of Achievement” and “Personalities of the South” in 1976. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth S. and Dr. W.W. Olive, Midway, Ky.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John R. Shoptaugh Jr., San Diego, and James D. and Joan S. Shoptaugh, Denham Springs; three sisters, Bernice D. Thibodeaux, Ethel D. Shaeffer and Sybil D. Boizelle, all of Baton Rouge; a brother, Ralph Dupuy, Baton Rouge; eight grandchildren, Lindsey and James Olive, both of Lexington, Ky., Susan Luka and Ellen Smock, both of San Diego, Cathy S. Landry, J. David and Mark Shoptaugh, all of Baton Rouge, and John E. Shoptaugh, Shreveport; and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Professor John R. Shoptaugh; parents, Joseph Albert and Victoria Saurage Dupuy; four sisters, Myrtle D. Kidd, Corrine D. Acosta, Pearl D. Brown and Inez D. Avery; and a brother, Joseph Albert Dupuy Jr. Pallbearers will be grandsons and a nephew, David Dupuy. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. John M. Hopper; Dr. W.W. Olive and Albert Kidd. She was a member of University United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and served on many committees involved in social, educational and fund-raising activities. She also enjoyed her association with the LSU Campus Club, Faculty Club, Baton Rouge Music Club, Current Reviewers Club, Cross Stitch and Order of the Eastern Star. HODGES, DAISY DAIGLE A resident of Baton Rouge, she died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Baton Rouge. She was 98, born May 2, 1900. Survived by a sister, Ida Dutt; a son-in-law, Milton Beatty; a daughter-in-law, Charleen Hodges; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Carey J. Hodges; and a daughter, Arless Beatty. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Legion of Mary and Padre Pio Prayer Group.
