He was born in Centreville, Miss., on Dec. 20, 1944, to Addie Louise Benton Gardner and Edwin Charles Gardner Sr. Charles graduated from Istrouma High School and attended LSU. He loved serving people and spent more than 42 years in local retail. He was fondly remembered for his compassion for others and his great sense of humor. Preceded in death by his father, Edwin Charles Gardner Sr. Survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean; his children, Edwin Charles Gardner III and wife Andie, of Mansfield, Texas, and Michael Prescott Gardner and wife Shari, of Greenwell Springs; his four grandchildren, Regan, Jenna, Chloe and Caden. He is also survived by his mother, Addie Louise Benton Gardner; his sister, Dr. Jan Gardner Brobst and fiancé David Browning, of Lafayette; brother, Frank "Ben" Gardner and wife Donna, of Greenwell Springs; brother-in-law, Bob Prescott and wife Jeanette, of Madison, Miss.; nephews and nieces, Dr. Robert William "Bo" Brobst Jr. and wife Jennifer, of Chicago, Ty Gardner, of Denham Springs, Gina Gardner, of Greenwell Springs and David and Jim Prescott, of Texas. He also leaves behind his beloved dog "Jake." Visiting will be at Charlet Funeral Home Inc. in Zachary on Monday, July 21, from noon until religious service at 2 p.m., conducted by Dennis Allen, pastor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Norwood.
