Mobley caledoniapltn@bayou.com November 17, 2009, 3:47 pm The first Baptist Church in East Caroll Paish was named "Seven Stars." It was located at Transylvania, La. on the north end of the beautiful Transylvania Lake. It was organized at the close of the War Between the States in 1867 by a man named Lewis Taylor(known as Daddy Lou). His son-in-law, Granerson Conn, was ordained and elected paster; and he pastored there until his death in 1905 during the yellow fever. There was a branch from the mother church, "Seven Stars" on every plantation all the way to Lake Providence. These branches would have Sunday School, weekly prayer meeting and sometimes, preaching service. But on the first Sunday in the month all came together to partake of the Lord's Supper. The service would last all day because the roll was called and each member paid ten cents to the mother church. The church was a large white building with stained glass windows, a tall bell tower and one of the best sounding bells anywhere. It could be heard many miles away. The Church had to be moved to the place where the Transylvania Baptist is presently located about 1913. The building burned around 1931, and a smaller building was erected on the same spot. In 1938 the Farm Security Admministration bought all the land in that area, and the land was resettled; so all the members had to move and the building was sold to the white settlers. Some of those who served as officers of Seven Stars during its existence were Pastors, Rev. Lewis Taylor, Rev. Granderson Conn Jr. and Rev. Frank Wallace. Other officers: John Stockner, Sie Barney, Joe Mosby, Wallace Coleman, Edward Cordelious, Green Richardson, Len Miller, Mathew Paige, Charlie Coleman, James Weston, Job Blackburn, John Parker, Harry Miller, Fred Johns, Jenkins Green, Melachi Brown, Willie Mitchell and Jerry Miller. Only Mr. Jerry Miller and Mr. Willie Mitchell are still living.
