The basic farm unit consisted of about 40 acres at a price of about $30/ac. After a modest down payment, the balance was financed for 10 years at 5% interest and secured by a mortgage. I was looking up one of the farmers and elected to copy the entire listing. There may have been more tracts sold earlier or later but I did not search the records. These tracts are all located in what was previously known as the Desha deadening. A "deadening" is presumably a location where the lumber company harvested the merchantable trees then burned the stumps and cull trees. It was this type of land that was sold to these small farmers. -------- Tract sales from Desha Lumber in January 1943 to various individuals as recorded in Book “TT” of the Conveyance Records of East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. All tracts located in Township 21 North, Range 12 East, except as noted. “TT” Total Cash Property Page Buyer’s Name Acres Price Down Description 513 Robert Foley 38.5 1,269 129 SW/4 of SE/4 in Sec 40 515 Shepherd Wooten 38.52 1,268 78 NW/4 of SE/4 in Sec 41 517 Will Powell 39.0 1,340 130 NW/4 of SW/4 in Sec 41 519 Julie Harris 40.0 1,150 100 SW/4 of NE/4 in Sec 45 522 Anderson Brown 40.0 1,273 103 NE/4 of NE/4 in Sec 45 524 Alexander Artley 38.5 1,302 172 SE/4 of SE/4 in Sec 40 526 Louis Granberry 38.5 1,246 16 SW/4 of SW/4 in Sec 40 528 Jack Walker 38.5 1,130 100 NW/4 of SW/4 in Sec 40 530 John Portis 39.6 1,024 24 NW/4 of SE/4 in Sec 24 (21/11) 532 Otis Graham 40.0 1,240 60 NE/4 of NE/4 in Sec 46 534 Sam Mingleton 60.0 1,811 161 NW/4 of NW/4 in Sec 46, and N/2 of SW/4 of NW/4 in Sec 46 536 Elijah Taylor 38.5 1,246 116 SE/4 of SW/4 in Sec 40 538 Robert Brown 40.0 1,215 55 SE/4 of SW/4 in Sec 46 540 Dave Dyson 40.0 1,240 80 NW/4 of SW/4 in Sec 42 542 Sam Wallice 26.5 789 49 S2/3 of SE/4 of NW/4 in Sec 40 544 Philip Nichols 40.0 1,280 100 part of Lot 3, Sec 44 545 James Nichols 31.0 986 76 part of Lot 2, Sec 42 548 Willie Armstrong 65.7 1,680 13 part of Lot 6, Sec 23 (21/11), and SE/4 of SW/4 of Sec 23 (21/11) 550 Primous Graham 19.5 631 31 N/2 of NE/4 of SW/4 in Sec 41 552 Boyd H.
