Rieves, who has been in the city for several weeks, committed suicide yesterday about 11 o'clock at his room procured from Commercial -Exchange Restaurant by taking an overdose of morphine. Rieves came to Lake Providence about two weeks ago to accept a position as butcher with Maquire & Schneider, being then under the influence of alcohol he was unable to go to work, since wich time his condition had grown no better. He became despondent and made his first attempt at suicide with a razor, but the instrument was taken from him by Dr. Easterling, the landlord. The same night he found some broken glas with which he attempted to cut the arteries in his wrist, this proved unsuccessful. The climax came Wednesday night when he took an overdose of morphine which he haad procured from some unknown source. He left a letter addressed to his wife in Crystal Spring and a note addressed to Dr. Easterling. The note was to the effect that he had come to his death thro' drink and that he did not want to be buried in the potter's field. He was 48 years old and leaves a wife and a son. His remains will be taken toda to Crystal Springs, Miss.
