October 28, 1904 Among the good and bad amendments that will be submitted to the people on November the 8th there is one that should be considered with especial favor by the voters of the people on November the 8th there is one that should be considered with especial favor by the voters of the state. It is Act 112 making provision for indigent confederate veterans. We might disagree as to men and as to measures--we may wage eternal warfare on the battle ground of practical theory, but we must not forget to pause in our party polemics and shake hands on any proposition that tends to make life a little easier for the last remaining years of the soldiers of the Confederacy. The fund that was set aside for pensioning the veterans of the Confederacy is totally inadequate, so that it has not been possible for some time to add any new names to the rolls, and even those already on the lists are receiving but the pittance of $2.50 to $3.90 per month. Year by year the ranks of the old Confederate soldiery are growing thinner. Their steps are growing feebler now, and age is bringing dimness to their eyes. It is well that the South accords them, once a year, the honor that is due them and the consecrated cause for which they fought. The annual re- unions of the Confederate veterans are attented with cheer and ovation. Eager hands are stretched out to clasp the fingers that once carried gun and sword amid the smoke and roar of battle, or held aloft the star spangled of the Confederacy, thro' the deadly hail of canister and grape. We say it is well that we mete to them this humble tribute of reverence and respect, but with our sentiment should go a material expression of our gratitude, lest our cheers fall like the dull cold mockery of hopocricy upon the hearts of those we honor and praise with the warmth of sentiment, while their bodies are shivering from the cold that pierces their threadbare garments. We feel that not a vote in this section will be cast against this amendment which makes provisions for the last declining years of the brave old soldiers. It is small return indeed for what they did for us and every vote against it will be occasioned by ignorant carelessness or malicious littleness of sould.
