Reporter Died, at just sundown, when the last rays were fringing with gold the western clouds, Tuesday evening last, September 24th, 1889, Eppes Davis age about 26. He was a native of Lake Providence, La. where his parents and brother and sisters were at the time of his death. He had been among us for upwards of three years, and his life during that time was one of quiet and temperate rectitude. He had been connected with the office of this paper, in the most contidential relations, for nearly two years, proving himself worthy of trust and honor, a firm and faithful friend, whose self-retired and studious life was as simple and unassuming as it was virtuous and peaceful. He died as he lived - quietly. The mortal remains were followed to their last resting place in the City Cemetery, Wednesday evening, by many of those who knew him, and there committed to the keeping of mother earth. Rev. D.W. Humphries of the Presbyterian Church , touching first upon his traits, character, and the sad circumstances and surrounding of his untimely death, Rev. P.C. Drew, of the Baptist Church, following with an appropriate reading from the scriptures, prayer being offered by Rev. T.C. Bradford of the M.E. Church, after which a fitting hymn was sung, and the last sad offices rendered. As the lowly mound was rounded up, ayoung lady, who had known the family, stepped forward and placed a bouquet of flowers upon it, as a sorrowing sister would have done. Then, just as the sun went down on the scene the benediction closed the solemn services. Farewell until morning and May His Sleep be Sweet.
