No cause known for this horrible deed. Morehouse Clarion 1/16, 1880 -- Page 2, Column 3 Lake Providence Murder The course pursued by the citizens of Providence toward the crew of a coal boat, which anchored at that place, is frowned upon by all good citizens everywhere. It seems that the crew of the coal boat and a potato boat went out into town and, after drinking to drunkeness, some of the crew became noisy, and threatened “to take the place.” Their boisterous demonstrations brought to the front City Marshal McGuire, who demanded the surrender of the drunken roust-a-bouts. Jim Brown, who was the noisiest and most demonstrative, and the Marshal clinched and two pistol shots were heard. The Marshal was killed. (abbr.) Morehouse Clarion August 20, 1880 -- Page 2, Column 5 James Brown, the murderer of City Marshal McGuire, of Lake Providence, had a preliminary examination before Judge Delony the other day and was committed without bail. He’ll be very apt to swing one of these days. Morehouse Clarion 1/15, 1881 -- Page 2, Column 5 James B. Brown, charged with the murder of Bernard McGuire, late city Marshall of Lake Providence, and confined in jail, was on the night of the 4th inst. taken out of prison by parties unknown and hung in the courthouse square.
