July 8, 1875 A good man is gone. A void is left in this community, which can never be filled. One of the oldest and most respected of our citizens answered to the roll call of death, last week. On the night of the 16th, the grim visiged messenger called for the spirit of Dr. S.P. Bernark and bore it away from his family and his friends. For months he had been a suffer without complaining. He seem anxious to bear himself up, and overcome what seemed to be hidden in his system, a latent disease. He would often on going home from the drug store have to be down, and give a mometary complaint of pain in the back. But would always manage to conceal his feelings sufficiently to allay all apprehensions on the part of his loving family. Finding that they gave him no relief they advised that he go to New Orleans and have the ablest physicians there to diagnose his disease. In New Orleans a surgical operation was performed on him and he was found to have cancer in the bowels. Dr. Richardson saw no hope, but told him to return home while life lasted, and prepare to be gathered to his father's.
