The original info was submitted by Mrs. Mae Haase, who is now deceased. I hope I have caught everything. My inventory of these two cemeteries agrees with Mrs. Sagely's in regard to the above. I first inventoried the two in 1949, I believe it was, and went back a few years later to take another look. I also have letters written by Eben Woodward that verify the spelling. First and most important, the name was spelled Woodward. Eben Woodward (in one of the cemeteries) and William Woodward (in the other) were brothers. The name was always, in Louisiana and back in Connecticut where they came from, spelled Woodward. However, people around Clinton this many years later may have thought it was "Woodard" because the second "w" was silent as it was pronounced. There are several Woodwards in both cemeteries who are incorrectly spelled "Woodard." But there are other errors of transcription in the Woodward - Poole Cemetery: 1. Eben Woodward died August 24, 1837, not August 4. 2. Mrs. M. R. Poole is incorrectly listed as Mrs. R. M. Poole. It's true she appears in court records as Rachel Maria about as often as Maria Rachel, but the initials on her gravestone are M. R. In his letters to her Eben Woodward (her first husband) addressed her as "Maria." 3. Margaret Woodward Steadman's middle name on her stone is Woodward, not Woodman as Mrs. Haase has it. 4. Margaret Woodward Steadman died July 5, 1883. M
