She got them from her mother's scrapbook; they appeared in the Clinton paper 1861, which was either Feliciana Democrat or East Feliciana Patriot. Old Roster Found When in Howell, Indiana, last month Mr. John A. White, Jr., found the original roster of the Hunter Rifles in the possession of Mrs. Julia Covert. He obtained a copy which appears below. The Hunter Rifles left Clinton April 30, 1861. It was the first company to leave the parish. As the roster will show, it has 153 men, too many to make up one company. It was sworn into the state service on the levee in New Orleans the next morning after it left here, May 1, 1861. It went into camp at the Metairie race course where it was divided into two companies, A and B. The company was then sent up to Camp Moore, Louisiana, where it was attached to and helped to make up the 4th Regiment of Louisiana Volunteer Infantry, Robert I. Barrow, Colonel; H. W. Allen, Lieutenant, and S. E. Hunter, Major. In the division of the company each man was allowed to join the one of his choice, each company to have the same number of men. A number of others had come on and joined the command by this time, which made some ninety men each. The election of Capt. Hunter as Major of the regiment made a vacancy in the original company, which was re-organized and called Company A, Hunter Rifles, then E. J. Pullen was elected Captain; G. A. Neafus, First Lieutenant; N. B. Barfield, Second Lieutenant; and H. Marston, Jr., Third Lieutenant. John T. Hillard was elected Captain of Company B, Hunter Rifles; J. J. Adams, First Lieutenant; E. C. Holmes, Second Lieutenant, and E. F. Hueston, Third Lieutenant. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS Captain--S. Eugene Hunter First Lieutenant--G. A. Neafus Second Lieutenant--E. J.
