Smith died at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 25, at Our Lady of the Lake hospital. He was 76 and a native of East Feliciana parish, living near Baywood. Services were held Friday at Bluff Creek Baptist church with Rev. H. C. Dykes officiating. Interment was in Bluff Creek Cemetery. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Amelia Walker of Baywood; a son, Emmett R. Smith of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Mrs. John Walter Genola of Baywood; four sisters, Mrs. Estelle Davidson of Dayle, Mrs. C. B. Curtis of Walker, Mrs. Steve Benton of Denham Springs and Mrs. A. A. Roe of Baton Rouge, four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Very Smith of Baywood. Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 30 Jan 1959: MCENERY BEAUCHAMP Funeral services for McEnery "Mac" Beauchamp of Clinton were held Sunday, Jan, 18, at the Clinton Methodist church, with Rev. Virigl M. Culpepper and Rev. Alvin Hall officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside. Beauchamp, who was 66, died Jan. 17 at Clinton Infirmary. A native of Clinton, he was retired from Esso in 1948 after 28 years of work. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Johnnie P. Beauchamp; two sons, Douglas M. And Thomas O., both of Clinton; three sisters, Mrs. W. J. Colle and Mrs. Sallie B. Hollister, both of Pascagoula, Miss., and Mrs. May Dixon of Port Arthur, Texas; one brother, E. W. Beauchamp of Ethel; four grandchildren and other relatives. Pallbearers were all nephew, John Moore, James Henry, Toler, Edwin and Lawrence Beauchamp and George J. Hollister. MRS. ELIZABETH WATSON Mrs. Elizabeth Embree Watson, 92, died at Our Lady of the Lake on Monday, Jan. 26. Funeral services were held Tuesday at her residence in Slaughter, with Rev. Harold Anderson and Dr. John Hopper officiating. Burial was in Redwood Cemetery. Mrs. Watson was a native of Centreville, Miss., but had long lived in Slaughter, where she was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Allen W. Tate, Miss Bessie Watson, and Miss Thelma Watson, all of Slughter; Mrs. Mary G. Alexander of Denton, Tex., and Mrs. M. W. Munson of St. Francisville; five grandsons, Lionel Gremillion of Jackson, Dr. Cilton Tate of Decatur, Ala., Allen Gremillion of Crowley and Morris Munson, Jr., of St. Francisville; a niece, Mrs. Ben McNeil of St. Rose; a nephew, Felix Embree of Slaughter, and five great-grandchildren. Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 6 Feb 1959: A. P. ACOSTA Funeral services for A. P. "Tony" Acosta of Jackson were held Saturday afternoon at the Jackson Presbyterian church, with Rev. J. A. Kelin of Grace Episcopal Church, St. Francisville, officiating. Interment was in Jackson Cemetery. Acosta, who was a member of the parish school board, died Friday after undergoing surgery in a New Orleans hospital. He was 52. A native of White Castle, Acosta had been in business in Baton Rouge before moving to Jackson, where he became prominent in business and civic affairs. He was a member of the Lions Club and of the advisory board of East Louisiana State Hospital. Surviving are his widow, the former Oliviea Dudley of Jackson; his father, Felix J. Acosta of Baton Rouge; a son A. P. Acosta, Jr., of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Mary Dudley Acosta of Jackson; two brothers, Ivan J. of Chicago and A. L. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and three grandchildren. ELIZABETH EMBREE WATSON Mrs. Elizabeth Embree Watson, age 92, expired at 8:40 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake on Monday, Jan. 26. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 27 at her residence in Slaughter with interment in the Redwood Cemetery. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Harold Anderson, of the Slaughter Baptist Church; Rev. G. H. Corry, minister of the Slaughter Methodist church, and Rev. Payne of the St. Francisville Methodist church. Mrs. Watson, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jonathan Embree and granddaughter of Judge J. Embree, all of Wilkinson County, Mississippi, resided in Slaughter the greater part of her life. Her husband, Mr. Allen Castle Watson, died on August 18, 1918. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary B. Alexander of Dallas, Texas; five daughters, Miss Thelma Watson, Miss Bessie Watson and Mrs. Allen Tate, all of Slaughter; Mrs. Curtis Gremillion of Crowley and Mrs. Morris Munson of St. Francisville; three nephews, Mr. Felix Embree of Slaughter, Mr. Albert Davis of Lake Village, Ark, and Mr. Roy Smith of Rochester, N.Y., and one niece, Mrs. Ben McNeil of St. Rose. Her pallbearers included her nephew, Mr. Felix Embree, and five surviving grandsons, Mr. Lionel Gremillion of Jackson, Dr. Cilton Tate of Decatur, Ala., Mr. Embree Earl Gremillion of Mobile, Ala., Mr. Allen Gremillion of Crowley and Mr. Morris Munson, Jr., of St. Francisville. Mrs. Watson is also survived by five great grandchildren. The Watchman, Clinton, La., 27 Feb 1959: MRS. ETTA M. WOOD Funeral services for Mrs. Etta McKay Wood were held at her residence in Ethel on Feb. 14, with Rev. J. B. Shearer of the Jackson Methodist Church as officiant. Burial was in the family cemetery. Mrs. Wood, widow of the late William Wood, died on Feb. 13 at her home. She was born Sept. 30, 1881, in Aberdeen, Scotland and began residence in the United States as a child. She had lived in Ethel for 75 years. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Wood of St. Francisville; three daughters, Mrs. A. L. Champagne and Mrs. Russell Perry, both of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. Roy J. Lanoue of Ethel; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. DR. W. W. PHARES Dr. W. W. Phares, a native of Jackson and pastor for 27 years of the South Dallas (Texas) Christian Church, died on Feb. 19 at his home in Houston, Tex., after a short illness. Funeral services were heldin Dallas on Feb. 22. Dr. Phares, who was 85, began teaching as a minister of the Disciples of Christ without pay while teaching school in Louisiana. He went to Texas and attended the old Add-Ran College near Fort Worth, now Texas Christian university. He taught school in Texas before returning to Jackson to teach and preach. Later he went to Jackson, Miss., as a pastor and then to Shelbyville, Tenn., and Anadarko, Okla. He served as secretary of the state mission board for the Mississippi Christian Church. Dr. Phares went to Dallas in 1914 as pastor of the South Dallas Christian Church, served for five years as editor of the Christian Courier and was active in promoting Christian education for Negroes. He served as a member of the board of Jarvis college for Negroes. For 20 years he was an honorary member of the board of trustees for TCU, from which he received an honorary doctor's degree. He was dean of Dallas pastors from point of continous service, from 1914 until his retirement in 1951. He was married in 1896 to the former Eula Whitney, who died Jan. 8. Dr. Phares is survived by three sons, Frank of Hollywood, Calif.; Don of New York and Elliott of Fort Worth; two daughters, Mrs. J. Frank Cunningham of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Charles D. Mohle of Houston; one brother, Charles Phares of Baker; one sister, Mrs. Lola Kennedy of Baton Rouge, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Watchman, Clinton, La., 27 Mar 1959: E. R. "NED" MORRIS Edward Roscoe "Ned" Morris of Wilson died on Sunday, March 15, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, Miss., after having been in ill health for some time. He was 64. Morris was a native of Jeff Davis Parish but had lived in East Feliciana for many years. He was a police juror from ward 4, having been appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late C. J. Hazlewood. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Community Church in Wilson, with interment in the Eastern Star cemetery there. Morris is survived by two sons, E. R., Jr., of Wilson and Lee Merlyn Morris of Zachary; two daughters, Mrs. W. R. Jones of Beaumont, Texas, and Mary Margaret Morris of Wilson; a sister, Mrs. R. L. Smith of Houston, Texas; two brothers, C. K. of Baton Rouge and D. G. Of Vinton, and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were W. A. Cook, E. C. Hartman, D. M. Falconer, J. E. Palmer, J. E. Hadskey and A. M. Verbois. Honorary pallbearers were members of the police jury, along with F. L. Norwood, R. K. Munson, L. E. Kennard and A. P. Johnston. MRS. WILLIE R. HATCHER Mrs. Willie Robins Hatcher, 75, died at her home in McManus on Saturday, March 14. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon at the Charlet Funeral home in Clinton by Rev. Alvin Hall. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery. She is survived by a brother, Merrick Robins of Clinton; three nephews and four nieces. MRS. JOSEPH BREITUNG Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph Breitung, who died on Saturday, March 14, were held Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Clinton. Rev. Myles Kerney officiated and interment was in the Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Breitung, who was 79, was the former Julia Eckart. She was a native and lifelong resident of Clinton. She is survived by three sons, Joseph, Jr., W. B. and F. L., all of Clinton; a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Keller of Bunkie; two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Ewing of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Otto Breitung of Clinton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were S. E. McKneely, J. O. Webb, M. C. Phillips, Shelton Gersch, Maurice Belzons and Delton Eckart. The Watchman, Clinton, La., 3 Apr 1959: MRS. IDA DAWSON Mrs. Ida Ellis Dawson, resident of Jackson since 1914, died Tuesday, March 24, at Our Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge after a week's illness. She was born near Yazoo City, Miss., on Jan. 11, 1884. In 1890, she came with her parents, Henry D. and Mary Susan Ellis, and family and settled in East Feliciana parish on Richland Hill plantation near Norwood. She was one of the first women to attend Centenary College at Jackson, from which she was graduated in 1902. She taught at Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Miss., until her marrage on Jan. 20, 1903, to Thomas Delos Dawson of Jackson, who preceeded her in death February 26, 1949. They were the parents of three sons and three daughters, T. D., Jr., of Glen Ridge, N.J., Ellis and Eugene of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Maida Tabor of New Orleans, Mrs. Susie Platt of Zachary, and Mrs. Doris Ledoux of DeRidder. She is survived also by 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four brothers, William J., Jesse C., and Thomas M. Of Baton Rouge, A. M. of Natchez, Miss., and six sisters, Mrs. Emma J. Ellis of Norwood, Mrs. S. W. Gunby, Mrs. H. L. McCutcheon and Mrs. Mattie E. Hall, all of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Guy Miller of Farmington, N.M., and Mrs. A. H. Sturgeon of Woodville, Miss. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 26, at the Jackson Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. John Shearer of Jackson, Rev. Jerome Cain of Istrouma Methodist Church, and Rev. A. A. Collins of Winbourne Methodist Church. Pallbearers were James Norsworthy, Dent Bankston, Robert Brannon, Robert McGill, F. A. Jenkins and W. B. Crain. Mrs. Dawson was a charter member of the St. Alban's chapter 80, Eastern Star, the Wednesday Club, the Jackson Home Demonstration Club, the Honor Club of the Eastern Star. She had served six terms as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of Jackson Methodist Church, and had taught a Sunday school class most of the years she lived in Jackson. CECIL R. CHANEY Funeral services for Cecil R. Chaney of Clinton were held Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at Charlet Funeral Home with Rev. Virgil M. Culpepper officiating. Chaney died in Clinton Infirmary at 3 a.m. Saturday after a long period of ill health. He was 48. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Essie Stewart Chaney, two sons, Stewart Lee and Cecil R., Jr., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Brown Chaney; three brothers, Clyde E., W. Roy, and W. Don. All are residents of Clinton except Don, who lives in Baton Rouge. LOUIS A. WINDHAM Louis A. Windham, a former county agent in East Feliciana, died on March 30 at the Baton Rouge General. A native of Merryville, he was 60. Funeral services were held in Baton Rouge on Tuesday. The Watchman, Clinton, La., 8 May 1959: MRS. H. W. LINDSAY Mrs. H. W. Lindsay of Greensburg died at her home Sunday morning, April 26. She was 81. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Greensburg Methodist church, with Rev. Charles Knight officiating. Interment was in the Greensburg Cemetery. Mrs. Lindsay is survived by four sons, Tom C. of Greensburg, J. K. of Jackson, H. W., Jr., of Baton Rouge, Jules of Louisville, Ky.; four daughters, Mrs. J. H. Rhodes of Zachary, Mrs. John Laird of Baker, Mrs. N. H. Stafford of Franklinton, Mrs. W. S. Dyson of Baton Rouge; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. L. C. BROWN L. C. Brown died Thursday, April 23, at his home in Norwood after a short illness. A native of Eupora, Miss., he was 52. He had been a lumberman for the past 18 years. Survivors include his wife, the former Johnnie Stewart; a son, Loys Cecil Brown, Jr., U.S. Army, Germany; a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Faye Blanchard; two sisters, Miss Ina Brown of Norwood and Mrs. Sally Poinsette of Baton Rouge, and one brother, J. C. Brown of Norwood. He was a member of the Norwood Baptist Church. Burial was in the Norwood cemetery with Rev. M. R. Dixon officiating. MRS. J. A. MCCOY Mrs. J. A. McCoy, the former Lovie Dee Hubbs of Clinton, died on Saturday, April 25, at Our Lady of the Lake. She was 64. A resident of Alto for many years, Mrs. McCoy was stricken during a visit with her son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. C. S. McConnell, in Baton Rouge. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Alto, with burial in the family cemetery. She is survived by a son, J. A. McCoy, Jr., of Alto; three daughters, Mrs. McConnell, Mrs. Andrew Craft of Monroe and Mrs. D. B. McKay of Mangham; one brother, VcVea Hubbs of Clinton; seven sisters, Mrs. Anna Irwin, Mrs. Maidel Lambert and Mrs. Arthur James, all of Baton Rouge; Mrs. Gordon H. MRS MATTIE HUGHES Mrs. Mattie Partin Hughes died in Field Memorial Hospital, Centreville, Miss., at 6:30 a.m. Friday. She was 79 and lived in Norwood and Baton Rouge. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Services were held in the Mt. Carmel Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, with burial in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Rev. James Spencer officiating. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Brookes Warren, Ferriday; Mrs. Otis Taylor, Centreville, and Mrs. E. G. Wallace, Bude, Miss.; four sons, Lamar Partin, Greenwell Springs; James E. Partin, Jerry M. Partin and Edward Partin, Baton Rouge; 38 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. The Watchman, Clinton, La., 15 May 1959: MRS. SAM IRWIN Funeral services for Mrs. Samuel R. Irwin, 71, of Clinton were held Wednesday, May 6, with Rev. Virgil Culpepper and Rev. Alvin Hall officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Irwin died on May 5 after a short illness. The former Mattie Nesom, she is survived by her husband, two sons, Alvin of Baton Rouge and Rowley of Clinton; three daughters, Mrs. Caston Cole of Greensburg, Mrs. Johnny Baronne and Mrs. Carl S. Broussard, both of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Mrs. Celeste Mansfield and Miss Emmie Nesom, both of New Orleans; two brothers, J. Nesom of Baton Rouge and Stanley Nesom of New Orleans; six grandchildren and other relatives. Pallbearers were Lee, Johnny and Jimmie Nesom, Henry B. Latham, Lawton Robins and Joe Jacocks. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 22 May 1959: MRS. THERESA BUETO Mrs. Theresa M. Bueto, who was born in Clinton on Oct. 15, 1868, died at Arlington, Calif., on May 7. Funeral services were held in Memet, with interment in the San Jacinto Valley cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ollie Snodgrass, and many nieces and nephews. L. C. RIVES Funeral services for Lester Cleo Rives of Clinton were held on May 14 at the First Methodist Church in Louisville, Miss., with Dr. J. D. Wroten, Rev. A. D. Lewis and Rev. H. C. Lunn officiating. Burial was in Memorial park in Louisville. Rives, a cattleman and lumberman with interests in Louisiana and Mississippi, died at his home in Clinton on May 13 at 4:15 a.m. of a heart attack. He was 55. Born in Winston County, Miss., he and his family had moved to Clinton five years ago from Louisville. He was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruth Shurden Rives; one son, Shurden, of Clinton; one daughter, Mrs. Johnny Jabour of Vicksburg, Miss., his mother, Mrs. Brooks Rives of Louisville; three sisters, Mrs. Robert H. Boyd, Mrs. Bill Prisock and Mrs. Jolly Pugh, all of Louisville; two brothers, Bill and Edwin Rives of Louisville, and one granddaughter. Pallbearers were: Everett Watkins, L. D. Attending the funeral from Clinton were Doyle Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. James Wiley, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Johnson, and Mrs. Nell Haynes. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 5 June 1959: MRS. RANDOLPH PIPES Funeral services for Mrs. Randolph Pipes were held Wednesday, June 3, in Natchez, Miss., at the First Presbyterian Church, with interment in the Natchez Cemetery. Mrs. Pipes died suddenly Tuesday morning at Our Lady of the Lake hospital, after having been stricken while visiting a sister, Mrs. W. D. Cotten, in Baton Rouge. The former Corinne Boatner of Vidalia, she had lived in Baton Rouge for many years while employed by the state. Several years ago, she wed Randolph Pipes, who lived at Avondale plantation near Clinton before their marriage. They had recently moved from Baton Rouge to Natchez and were just completing a new home. They were in Baton Rouge at the time of her death to select furnishings. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Cotten; two nieces, Martha Cotten of Baton Rouge and Mrs. Katherine Blankenship of Natchez, and one nephew, Boatner Cotten of Baton Rouge. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 12 June 1959: MRS. J. O. DILLY Funeral services for Mrs. J. O. Dilly of Clinton were held Thursday, June 11, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. Rev. Myles Kearney officiated. Mrs. Dilly, a native and lifelong resident of Clinton, was 84 years old and remained active and interested in church and civic affairs of the parish until her last illness. She died at Clinton infirmary June 10. She had operated an insurance agency for 60 years and was at one time in newspaper employment. She is survived by one son, Ray Dilly of Lake Charles; one daughter, Mrs. Landry Richardson of Clinton; one sister, Miss Ida Hines of Baton Rouge; one brother, St. George Hines of Lakeland, four grandchildren, and numerous other relatives. Pallbearers were Mitchell McConnell, Ben Dart, Jr., Worth Norwood, A. C. Feierabend, Jr., Conner Percy and Morgan Montgomery. MRS. CLYDE WALLER Funeral services were held Monday morning for Mrs. Clyde Waller, a 68-year-old native of Clinton who died at 3 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of the Lake hospital. Mrs. Waller resided in Baton Rouge where she was a member of the Istrouma Methodist church. Rev. Jerome Cain conducted the funeral services and burial was held at National cemetery. Mrs. Waller is survived by her sister, Mrs. Henry Sanford of West Columbia, Texas; brother, Fred W. Woodward of Clinton and a number of nieces and nephews. CECILIA SCHILLING Mrs. Cecilia Pennington Schilling, 78, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stewart Aucoin, of Central. Funeral services were held at Rabenhorst Funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. D. P. Worsham and Rev. C. P. Currier officiating. Interment was at Perkins cemetery at Baywood. The wife of the late M. H. Schilling, she is survived by three sons, T. L. Schilling of Denham Springs, B. F. Schilling of Baton Rouge and C. W. Schilling of Greenwell Springs. Four daughters, Mrs. George Harrison, Mrs. Stewart Aucoin, Mrs. Nelson McLin, all of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. Alva Cowart of Watson; three sisters, Mrs. L. M. Smith of Baywood, Mrs. Nettie Smith and Mrs. Guy Kirby of Clinton; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 17 July 1959: CARL HOOGE Carl Hooge, 91, of Gros Minstenburg, Germany, and a resident of East Feliciana parish for 78 years, died at 4:15 a.m., Friday, July 10, in Clinton infirmary. He was born Sept. 2, 1867, and came to this country at the age of 14. Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, with religious rites at the Zion Lutheran church. Rev. Thomas E. Schuetz of Baton Rouge officiated and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. Hooge, a farmer and merchant, was the husband of the late Wilhelmine Warm Hooge and father of the late Henry E. Hooge of Clinton. He is survived by three sons, Charles and Herman Hooge of Clinton and Walter E. Hooge of Baton Rouge; four daughter, Mrs. W. A. Callenius of Slaughter and Mrs. Arthur (L. H.) Boeneke, Mrs. B. W. Aull and Mrs. Wesley Woodward, all of Clinton; one sister, Mrs. P. L. Speeg of Slaughter; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member and one of the organizers of the Zion Lutheren church. Hooge was the son of Carl and Caroline Hooge, both of Germany, who came to America with their family of six children in 1881, settling in the vicinity when Clinton was a mere hamlet. Relatives from New Orleans attending the funeral were Mrs. Erdman Hooge, Mrs. Herman Hooge and Mrs. Mary Zehender. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 24 July 1959: TOMMY LYN PAXTON Funeral services were held Friday for Tommy Lyn Paxton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Paxton, of Slaughter. The 15-year-old boy was killed instantly when lightning struck a pecan tree in a horse corral near his home and traveled to his body, according to Auch Doughty, sheriff of East Feliciana parish. A brother, Kenneth Paxton, discovered the body when he returned home from a field trip. Finding no one at home, he went into the corral. Dr. Clovis Toler, parish coroner, said the boy was electrocuted. Rev. W. C. Hallmark and Rev. Harold Anderson officiated at the funeral services which began at the Paxton home and continued in Redwood Baptist church. Interment was in the Redwood cemetery. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 14 Aug 1959: LEROY RAYMOND GARIG, JR. Ten-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Garig died Monday morning at the Field memorial hospital in Centreville, Miss. Survivors are the parents, one sister, Elizabeth Ann; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Wilbur Johnson, and the parternal grandfather, Ruskins Garig, all of Norwood. HOWARD SMITH Ninety-five-year-old Howard Smith, native of Jackson and resident of Port Hudson, died Aug. 8 in Baton Rouge at the home of a daughter. Smith was a carpenter and farmer for many years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythian, Pride of Jackson Masonic Lodge and Pride of Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 60, and was a Baptist deacon. Survivors include sons, Charlie, Archie, and George, Baton Rouge; Howard, Jr., Nathaniel, Willie and Joseph, New Orleans; and James, Port Hudson; daughters, Janie Liggit, Sorrento; Essie Sento, Frierson, Celestine Collins, Baton Rouge; Nancy Wells, Port Hudson; Mamie Houston, Chicago, Ill.; and Henrietta Bell, Clinton; two sisters, 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 21 Aug 1959: JANE ERWIN AND CAROL WHITE Two teen-age East Feliciana girls lost their lives Wednesday afternoon in a two-car wreck near Jackson which left four other persons injured, one of them critically. Dead are Jane Erwin, 16, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. H. P. Erwin, and Carol White, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Earl Palmer, all of Jackson. Hospitalized at Clinton Infirmary is Diane Wilcox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Wilcox of St. Francisville and granddaughter of Mrs. T. E. Nesom of Clinton. The three girls were traveling east on La. 10, in West Feliciana parish, in a lightweight foreign-built car. According to incomplete reports, the driver lost control of the car, which turned around in the road and was hit from the rear by another vehicle being driven west by W. P. Honeycutt. Honeycutt, assistant coach at Zachary High, had as passengers his wife and their three-year-old son. All escaped with minor injuries. Mrs. Honeycutt is the former Emily Odom, whose parents live in Jackson. Funeral services for Miss Erwin were held yesterday at 4 p.m. at the Jackson Presbyterian church, with Rev. Kenneth Reeves officiating. Interment was in Jackson Cemetery. Survivors inclued her parents, a sister, Mrs. John Hadskey, Jr., of California; two brothers, Herbert, Jr., and Tommy, both of Jackson. Pallbearers were Achille, Francis, Fernand and Ronald Bougere, Irvin Marks and John Ricketts. Funeral services for Miss White were set for this morning at 11 at Jackson Methodist church, with Rev. J. B. Shearer officiating and interment in Jackson Cemetery. Survivors of Miss White include her parents, four sisters, Janice, her twin; Therese, Margaret Earl and Mary Eve; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Clark of El Paso, Tex., and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Essie Palmer of Jackson. Pallbearers named were classmates at McKowen High School--Tommie Adams, Larry Norman, Wayne Leggett, J. D. Kent, Jr., Tommy Fore, Johnny Hurst, Lloyd Cutrer and Freddie Daricek. Miss Wilcox is in Clinton Infirmary where attendants reported her "resting well". The Honeycutts were treated at the Baton Rouge General and released. PIPES Dr. David McKowen Pipes was buried in his hometown cemetery at Jackson yesterday morning after having fatally shot himself Tuesday afternoon at his residence in Baton Rouge. Dr. Pipes, who was 54, had in past years been under treatment at several places, including recently at East Louisiana State Hospital. His body was found in the residence after law officers, in answer to a call from his wife, had by various means for several hours to get him outside the house. Funeral services were held at Trinity Episcopal church in Baton Rouge, with Rev. Stratton Lawrence and Rev. W. T.Ferneybough officiating. Dr. Pipes is survived by his widow, the former Novie Whitmore; his mother, Mrs. D. M. Pipes of Jackson; four stepdaughters, Mrs. John Taylor, Mrs. L. B. Bahan, Jr., Miss Mary Emma Orr and Miss Carroll Orr, all of Baton Rouge; four sisters, Mrs. Glenn Lawson of Jackson, Mrs. Davis Folkes of St. Francisville, Mrs. R. C. Cox of Baton Rouge and Mrs. A. MISSOURI ALFORD Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 30, at New Zion Baptist church for Mrs. Missouri Fluker Alford, 66, who died Saturday morning at Independence hospital after an extended illness. Rev. S. W. Bradham officiated. Burial was in Alford cemetery. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Odell Hooge, Mrs. Hazel Henry of Clinton, Mrs. Clyde Devane of Amite, Mrs. Idell Desmond of Independence. Three sons, Clifton of Jackson, Percy of Amite, and Genie of Donaldsonville. Four sisters, Mrs. Georgia Newman, Mrs. Mollie Bates of Osyka, Miss., Mrs. Sallie Woodard of Kentwood, and Mrs. Effie Davidson of Chesbrough and 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The Citizen-Watchman, Clinton, La., 18 Sep 1959: AUGUSTUS S. DELEE Augustus Scott DeLee, retired independent oil operator of Dallas, Tex., died of a heart attack on Monday, Aug. 31, the day after his 85th birthday. DeLee was born in Clinton, the son of Frances Caulfield and Dr. John Scott DeLee, said to be the youngest surgeon to go to the War Between the States from Louisiana. DeLee entered the oil business at Burkburnett when he was 18 and retired about five years ago. He had lived in Dallas 50 years and was a charter member of of the Dallas Elks club. He was a member of the Methodist church and worked in several civic and philanthropic endeavors. He was buried in Dallas. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Scott of Dallas and Mrs. Tom Wright of Atascadero, Calif.; three grandchildren, and one brother, Hatcher DeLee of Dallas. Hatcher DeLee, who will be 82 on Dec. 13, recalled in a letter to The Watchman that his father died when he was 13 months old and over the years the mother and children moved from Clinton to Texas. Other children, no longer living, were Willie, John, Lewis, Charlie and Annie. MRS. MARGARET HOWELL Services were held at Grace Episcopal Church, St. Francisville, on Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m. for Mrs. Margaret Chambers Howell. A life-long resident of East Feliciana Parish, she was born Sept. 5, 1870, at Oak Hill Plantation near Jackson, the daughter of the late Capt. James R. Chambers and Ida McWillie Chambers. She was the widow of the late Henry Clay Howell. She is survived by two sons, James Richard and Henry Clay, Jr., and two daughters, Mrs. Joseph S. Reily and Miss Margaret J. Howell, all of Jackson; four grandchildren, Richard Clay, Michael F., Henry Clay IV, and Mary Margaret Howell. Following short prayers at the home of her son, Henry, in Jackson, Rev. J. A. Miss Stone, a resident of Baton Rouge for the past 60 years, was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Amite County, Miss. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Dr. F. J. A member of Slaughter Methodist Church and a native of Clinton, he lived in Baton Rouge. He was a flagman for the Illinois Central Railroad and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He is survived by his wife, the former Julia Thompson; three sisters, Mrs. J. W. Monahan and Mrs. A. E. Corcoran of Slaughter, and Mrs. J. Cooper of Houston, Tex., and two brothers, W. H. Felps and D. Felps of Denham Springs. Services were held at Rabenhorst Funeral home in Baton Rouge Saturday conducted by Rev. A. Jerome Cain and Rev. G. H. Corry. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. A native of Clinton, he was 44. Funeral services were held at the Second Baptist Church of Jackson with Rev. S. W. Bradham, C. A. Martin, and J. B. Shearer officiating. Interment was in Concord Cemetery with William Souder, W. M. Smith, Claude Blackman, Horace Ballow, Collins Williams and Batey Sanders as pallbearers. He is survived by his widow, the former Katie Margaret Fsula, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. K. DeLee of Jackson; three sons, John Paul; a sister, Mrs. Hollis Arthur, Jr., Thomas Joseph and Kent of Clinton; nine brothers, James of Lake Charles, Thomas of Baton Rouge, Daniel, John Andrew and Samuel, all of Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
