Young was unable to perform his military duties. The original document, written on ruled paper, appears to have been folded and unfolded countless times, no doubt to explain why the bearer was absent from his military uit. One might surmise that perhaps Private John L. Young had no real enthusiasm for service in the Confederate Army. John L. Young was the son of Jean Baptiste Young,Jr. and Evelina Bihm. He was born in St. Landry Parish on May 8, 1832.) This is to certify that private J. L. Young of co. A 2nd Cav. has been for several months under my treatment for mumps, afterwards for sore eyes during all of which time up to the present he has been unable to perform military duty, [because?] his eyes are not sufficiently strong to bare strong sunlight.
