(Opelousas, La.) 1890-1921, December 04, 1909, Image 9 In the death on Nov. 29th of Mr. Pierre Aucoin, Chataignier loses one of her most valuable citizens, after a long and patient suffering. He was forty-two years on March 19, 1909, and the loving husband of Josephine Vezina, leaving her and six children to mourn his death, the oldest son a boy of sixteen. Mr. Aucoin caught a blow on the left cheek about three years ago while cutting wood. His cheeks beginning to swell, he visited a doctor, and was advised to go to Lafayette to consult a specialist. He was told he had cancerous tumor. He was taken to New Orleahs (sic), where he was operated on, but with all the medical and surgical skill, the cancer was doing its deadly work until the end came. Mr. Aucoin suffered untold agonies, but he always tried to hide his pain from his friends, always saying it did not pain him, and when he would speak of his affliction, he would turn the subject off with a joke, always bearing and enduring his pain with courage until the end came. Mr. Aucoin, although uneducated, was always one of the first to take part in anything that concerned the public. His death will leave a gloomy shadow over this community. May he rest in the peace he deserves is the wish of a friend and sympathizer of the family.
