(Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, September 12, 1885, English, Image 1 Obituary. Our peaceful little village is again thrown into universal mourning, over the death of its best and noblest citizen Mr. PROSPER DAIRE, whose spirit departed for a better and brighter clime, last Wednesday, 2d inst, at about one o'clock p. m. Mr. Daire was about 43 years old, well preserved and a fine specimen of manhood. He was a mason, a christian and a most estimable gentleman in every respect. He was loved and esteemed by all who knew him. His character and charitable spirit - his kind and placid disposition are so well known that any attempt to eulogize him in the memory of his weeping friends, would necessarily prove futile. Possessing however a thorough knowledge of his goodness, am sure that he is doubly worthy of every attribute of praise and kind remembrance that may be bestowed upon him. His last day on earth was a most trying ordeal to his family and friends. It was a scene long to be remembered in the hearts of hie (sic) friends; though it causes a bitter pang, a tear, or a sigh, we would embosom (sic) it more fondly than if it were a scene of delight. Who, even when the tomb is closing upon the remains of a loved one, when he feels his heart as it were crushed in the closing of its portal, would accept of consolation that must be brought by forgetfulness. "No, the love which survives the tomb is one of the noblest attributes of the soul." If it has its woes, it has likewise its delights, and when the overwhelming burst of grief is calmed into a gentle tear of recollection, we realize then that "there is a happy land and not so far away." "Who would root ont (sic) such a sorrow from the heart?" We deeply sympathize and condole with his lamenting family in their almost unbearable affliction. Tho' why should we darken our eyes with tears, for methinks I hear his spirit whispering from Heaven: Weep not, grieve not, oh, mourn not for me, for I am supremely happy in my Heavenly home; but prepare to meet me some future day when we may strike hands to sever never, never, more. He waited for his last rites to be said, With the pathetic patience of the dead; When tenderly his manly form we lay In its last couch, with covering of clay. A TRUE FRIEND. ****************** 2ND Obituary source: The Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, September 05, 1885, Image 1 DIED. - On Sept. 2d, 1885, at his residence in the town of Ville Plate, his birthplace, Prosper Daire, aged 43 years, 2 months and 13 days.
