Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com April 5, 2019, 10:23 pm source: The Ville Platte Gazette (Ville Platte, Louisiana) Saturday, 04 June 1938, pg. 1 EVANGELINE LOSES PIONEER IN DEATH OF HOMER MANUEL Homer Manuel, Sr., Early Settler of Evangeline, Dies Here at 84 The parish lost one of its pioneer settlers in the death Tuesday of Homer Manuel Sr. Mr. Manuel was 84. The elderly Ville Plattean (sic) died at his home on Court street where he had lived 26 years. He had been in a coma for several days when he died. A native of L'Anse aux Pailles, Mr. Manuel was born several years before the outbreak of Civil War hostilities and four of his brothers saw service under Lee at Richmond. When he was 26 he married Miss Basile Ledoux and they settled near his former home in L'Anse aux Pailles. There he became a prominent landowner and a figure in local politics being instrumental in the creation of Evangeline parish in 1910. Mrs. Manuel's death four years ago broke up a union of 57 years. He is survived by four sons, Lezy of Mamou, August of L'Anse aux Pailles, Homer and Rene of Ville Platte; two daughters, Mrs. T. T. Ortego and Mrs. Katherine Bertrand of Opelousas; a sister, Mrs. Sophie Fontenot of Mamou, several grand children, great grand children and great great grand children. Services were conducted at the Sacred Heart Church here Wednesday morning. Interment was in the L'Anse aux Pailles cemetery where his wife is buried.
