A daughter of his married John Lovelace, who donated the land for the church and cemetery. The land for the church was given in 1858, but the cemetery land was in use before that, in 1853. Many of the oldest graves have no markers, and have been almost obliterated. Some of the first pioneers who came to the island and to what is now Franklin Parish are buried here.
