SMITH PRIVATE CEMETERY



This private cemetery has long been abandoned.  It is located 

just before you get to Big Creek.  As you round the curve 

towards the bridge at Big Creek on Hwy 135, look toward the 

left behind the first green house on the left.  The remains 

of the cemetery is shaded by hugh trees in a pasture now owned 

by Mr Jay Cummings.  Tombstones are now all broken and stacked 

and the fence no longer exists.  The stones were very difficult 

to read.  Only some initials were left.  Copied Oct 4, 1983

 

A large marker that reads 

''THIS MARKS THE FAMILY BURIAL GROUND OF JAMES AND ELIZABETH SMITH."

 

William T Kelsey,  DEPARTED THIS EARTH 12-13-1850,  

AGED 25 YRS, 6 MOS, 11 DAYS 

 

James Smith, DIED  11-1-1860 AGED 17 YRS

 

Laura A Smith, DIED 8-9-1857  AGED 2 YRS 7 MOS 3 DAYS

   

Nancy E C Smith, BORN Ma- 4, 185-  Died  8-28-1863

 

Eugenia E Smith, DIED 12-17-1859 AGED 13 YRS, 5 MOS, 21 DAYS

 

Zachariah A Smith, DEPARTED THIS LIFE  2-14-1848 

  AGED 32 YRS 11 MOS  2 DAYS

 

The following were tombstones that were so badly broken 

it was impossible to put them together or read.
