He married Catherine Bynum Abt. 1841 in Covington/Jones Co., Mississippi, daughter of John Bynum and Catharine Unknown. She was born Abt. 1825 in Jones Co., Mississippi. Notes for John Ira Welch: Ref. Chambers letter ....... "John Ira, the third son, married Catherine Bynum and settled in the same locality. A few years later he died, leaving several small children." Notes for Catherine Bynum: On the 1853 Mississippi Territory census, Cathrine is listed as head of household - two males (Timothy, Hiram) and 5 females (Cathrine, Cintha, Mary, Liddy and unknown) 1860 Fed. Census has Cathrine, age 35, H. R. Welch age 15, Cintha R. Welch, age 13; Mary L. Welch age 11; A. C. Welch, age 6 (later census records show him born in 1852 which would have made him 8 in 1860) Simeon C. Welch, age 3; Aabsolum, age 1; Mary E. E. Welch 18; (born in Georgia) and Timothy L., age 17. Notes for Hiram Rankin Welch: Ref: Clem Akins -" Hiram was a wagon master in the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was captured in the fall of Vicksburg and taken across the Mississippi River into Louisiana. After a few weeks they were all paroled, after taking an oath that they would not fight anymore. Hiram went home for a while and then joined his re-formed unit. During this time the CSA showed him as AWOL ! He got paid one time during the war. He joined up at Brandon, Mississippi." In 1870 Fed Census he is listed as 'Laborer' (probably worked for his father-in-law next door) they are listed in the P.O. district of Natachez. In 1880 Fed. Census he is listed in Helms Precinct as a 'Farmer'; he moved between 1870 and 1880, I think from the north side of Natchez, near Pine Ridge, to the south side between Natchez and Sibley. We know/think Hiram moved to Brighton Plantation as overseer when Bates(his son) was still in grade school = 1875 - 1882, probably soon after he and Martha married. Ref: audio tape of Alice Welch Wynkoop, (Uncle Bates daughter) Bates was in Jefferson College = (age 14) 1883 - 1886 Hiram and family moved to Louisiana in 1894 (Ref: notes written by Emma Welch Eley says 1894; Ref: notes written by Evie Colter McDuff, says 1895) In the 1910 Fed. Census Hiram is living in the home of his oldest son, John/Jack Livingston Welch and Maggie Colter Welch. More About Hiram Rankin Welch: Burial: Chase Cemetery, Chase, Franklin Parish, Louisiana Notes for (Hulda?) Malinda (Mary) Mathews: Some of the Mathews spelled their name "Mathis". In 1860 Fed. Census of Scott Co. Mississippi, 'Mary' is listed as Malinda, the second child of John and Martha Mathews. On 1870 Fed Census, Adams Co., Miss., she is listed as Mary - wife of Hiram R. Welch, with 3 children. Next door is her father, John Mathews, and her brothers and one sister, Martha. The names and ages of the brothers in 1860 match up with the name and ages of brothers listed in the 1870 census. Burial Ref: Memories of Alice Welch Wynkoop, daughter of Ira Bates Welch.
