There were twenty-five students taught by Captain W.P. Powers. Captain W.P. Powers was born in Canada and came south during the Civil War to fight for the Confederacy. After the war Captain Powers remained in Louisiana and in Franklin Parish. He taught school, became the proprietor of The Franklin Sun news-paper, and for a short time was the postmaster in Winnsboro. Like other schools of this period of history, the sessions lasted from six weeks to three months. The weather, as well as the financial condition of the parents of the pupils, influenced the length of the school sessions. To support the school and the teacher, a tuition fee of one to five dollars was charged.
