They were the grandparents of the families of T.A. Scott, Doc Scott, F.N. Abell and E.C. Abell. J.E. Abell was born in the year 1811 in Copenhagen, Denmark; his wife was born in 1813 near Hamburg, Germany. Both parties arrived in New York and came by boat to what is now, Columbia. There they met for the first time and were married in 1842. They then moved to a wilderness which is now Winnsboro. Another family, the Willises came about hte same time and owned the land now known as Berry hill. The first child of J.E. and Anna Abell was Edward Charles, born in 1846. After the childs birth, the family moved about one and a half miles northeast of what is now Winnsboro; there Hannah, Fritz and Christine were born. Among other people moving to the settlement were Henry Scott and family from Mississippi. Their son T.A. (Mack) Scott, fought in the Civil War in the Battle of Mansfield. Because some of the men were needed at home to guard the homefront, J.E. Abell remained. After Mack's return from the war, he married Hannah Abell on July 11, 1872. To this marriage was born Henry, Louis, Fred, Claud, Benson, Pearl (later Butler) and Aubrey. Because of their love for children, they reared seven foster children in their home. For many years Mack Scott owned and operated the first drug store in Winnsboro. The west end of the C.L. Snyder residence was once part of the first drug store. In the early 90's, Mack Scott donated the land for the Winnsboro Masonic Lodge. The family has been interested in all civic and religious activities of the community. Mr. Scott had extensive land ownings-the present Taylor addition and West End were originally one of his three farms. Fred Scott served as mayor of Winnsboro for many years. During his lifetime, he and Benson owned and operated Scott's Drug company. At the present time, Aubrey ownes Scott-Corbitt Drug company. Claud's interests have been in planting, while "Miss Pearl" has taught school. Two years ago, "Miss Pearl" retired after about 40 years of service. Today four of Mack and Hannah's children reside in Winnsboro. They are Benson, Claud, Aubrey and Pearl. Two sons died before reaching adulthood, while Mr. Fred passed away in later years.
