A very old family in the hill section of Quachita, the Masons of the Mason community moved into Franklin Parish after the Civil War. John Mason, a community leader and educated minded, banded with Jim King to construct the first building designed expressly for school purposes in Ward 8. Along with Henry Humble Buie, they hired a teacher, a Mr. Warner at $30 per month to teach family children and others in the area. John Mason acquired large land holdings in what is now Mason Community. The family became connected with the Buies, Bonners, Moores, Kings, and many others in the community. Not only did he manage to give his large family better-than-average educations on the local level, he sent some of them to college and business schools. Of his children, Ernest and Bob stayed in the community, Mr. Bobby, at whose place the old Mason post office was located, died in recent years. Ernest married a pioneer school teacher, Bessie Bonner. Product of a business college, Ernest Mason has been a faithful public service servant for many years, serving on many agricultural committees and boards. He was also a School Board Member from Ward 8.
