Simon Russell Hickingbottom ran for the state senate in Louisiana around 1938. 
He registered in Rayville as;
Candidate: Simon Russell Hickingbottom
Party: Sharecropper

It was told that one of his opponents was a man named Jim Bowie.  
Mr. Bowie and Mr Hickingbottom both lost. Mr Hickingbottom  
later campaigned for Sam Jones when he ran for governor against 
Earl Long in 1940.
