Don't ask why Swampers was selected by the government as the name of this community on Bayou Macon. A list of many names was submitted to the government by local residents and it was virtually conceded by the local populace that Killian or Killian's Ferry would be the choice. But evidently the government already had post offices of similar names, and the selection was Swampers. The name Swampers was placed on the list of names by local persons who jokingly remarked that the mail service would benefit mostly those persons living in the swamp or low lands east of the bayou. Swampers is located 12 miles northeast of Winnsboro and is also known locally as Killian's Ferry. Swampers' first postmaster is J.L. Donnell, local merchant, and the postoffice is located in Mr. Donnell's business house. Heretofore, residents of this area have been served by rural carriers out of winnsboro, and roadside mail boxes came into existence in a cluster at the ferry on the bayou. More than 100 families had roadside boxes located here and the need of postoffice service has been evident for some time.
