He was married and working as a tanner when he was recruited to enlist on Feb. 22, 1862, in Winnsboro. Samuel was wounded in the thigh and captured in Sharpsburg, MD. on Sept. 17, 1862. He was held at a U.S. hospital in Frederick, MD and then exchanged. He was sent home on furlough and died in Dec.1862 from effects from his wounds.
