Truly Carter, aged 28, log hauler of Winnsboro, was fatally shot by Dr. C. J. Gordon, 55 years old, at 6 o'clock Sunday evening at Sicily Island in front of the doctor's office following an altercation which precipitated when Carter, who is said to have been in an intoxicated condition, made several personal remarks relative to the doctor. Eye witness stated that the doctor was standing near the door of his office when Carter, John Russell, and Lee James, all young men of Winnsboro, and said to have been under the influence of liquor, passed in front of him. Carter is alleged to have said, "There is one - doctor in this town that I would like to attend to." The doctor is said to have replied, "Why young man I am the only doctor in this town. I guess you are looking for me." Following this an argument arose. Carter would have fain struck the doctor, but was restrained by by-standers. Carter is reported to have tried to strike the doctor again. Dr. Gordon reached his car which was near and secured his pistol. He shot Carter through the brain several times and an estray bullet struck a bystander in the leg, inflicting a slight wound. Dr. Gordon was in a weakened condition, having undergone an operation a few weeks ago. The doctor was back in his office on Monday morning. ----------------------------------------------------
