Chase Negro Dies in Sunday Stabbing

A 28-year-old negro man, arrested for the fatal stabbing 
of another in the early hours of Sunday morning here, was 
conditionally released under $2,000 bond Wednesday.  
He is Joe N. Chisley of Liddieville.

Dead of numerous knife wounds is Max Hooker, 27-year-old 
negro of Chase, who, witnesses testify, started the fight 
which ended his life when Chisley asked to dance with 
Jessie Lee Blount, 27, Chase.

The altercation took place about 12:30 a.m. Sunday outside 
Leroy’s Place at 1009 Newman street, Winnsboro, where two 
negroes, one of them the owner, Leroy Lumpkin, were arrested 
for “knife fighting and pistol-whipping” last Wednesday.  
The parties involved Sunday morning had been drinking heavily.

According to a witness, Hooker struck the first blow, stabbing 
Chisley in the back with a pocket knife.  Another account is 
that both Hooker and his brother, A. J. Hooker, attacked Chisley.

Hooker was pronounced dead on arrival at Rogers clinic, where 
he and Chisley were taken by bystanders, of a two-inch laceration 
under the left arm, a pierced lung and other server lacerations.  
Officer theorized that the immediate cause of death was loss of blood.

Chisley sustained cuts in the back, head and shoulder and considerable 
loss of blood.  About two inches of Hooker’s knife blade had broken 
off at the base of Chesley’s skull and had to be removed by the doctor 
treating him.  He was incarcerated in the Franklin parish jail, 
immediately following treatment.

The negro woman involved was held in the Winnsboro jail as a material witness.

Investigating the slaying were Winnsboro night marshals 
Louie Boyle and Marvin Bowlin.
